Write of passage counselinghat does “rite of passage,” mean to you? What was your rite of passage like for you when you went from a young adult into adulthood? Was it filled with ceremony and ritual that infused the transition with meaning? Or did you shift from youth into adulthood without even noticing?  Was it a difficult transition or was it easy? Did your rite of passage offer you clarity or did it just confuse you?

Youth into adulthood is one of the most common transitions all of us will go through. Death is another example of a rite of passage all of us will pass through. Yet, there are other rites of passage that some will go through that others will not. For example, only some of us will go through marriage, only some of us will go to college, and yet only a select others will be indoctrinated into a religion or a spiritual path. These are rites of passage that are a choice that we volunteer to partake in.

There is another rite of passage that is more rare to experience and is often overlooked, even when it is experienced. That is the rite of passage when someone goes from an aimless, cloudy future to the clarity and inspiration of finding one’s purpose.

The common experience for those going from “no purpose” to entering the womb of his/her purpose, is to go through the feeling of being lost, confused and drifting through life to the experience of feeling clarity, direction, inspiration, and a declaration, “This is what I want to do with my life!” It brings renewed vigor, it offers a direction in which to go delightedly towards, and inspires one to learn new and exciting topics. To take your life in your hands and to know that you have something to offer this world that no one else can create and go for it, is what powerfully initiates this rite of passage. It is everyone’s right as a human being to discover his/her purpose, for everyone has a purpose. You would not be on this planet if you did not have something to learn and something to offer that no one else is capable of. Remember, there is no one else like you, and your purpose is just as unique.
